Paint, breaking open.

Emergence collection mood board - hand painted pod, pebble and texture patterns in chartreuse, magenta, gold and violet on pale gray and navy grounds, with wallpaper and pillow mockups and color swatches

Every form in Emergence is real paint. I pushed a palette knife through yellow oxide, quinacridone magenta, Payne’s gray and titanium buff, and let a lime green come through like new growth. They look like pods and seeds splitting open, but nothing in nature grows like this. It’s paint doing what paint does when you let it move.

I painted these forms meaning them to become a pattern collection. First they became a collage book, Wild Creation: Spring – Emergence, and now they’re the collection I saw in the first place. The knife ridges, the dried rings and the ragged edges all stayed in, and the ground underneath is scraped from the painting I made alongside them.

Four designs, two grounds: airy Mist and glowing Navy. Which one would you live with?

On the wall, on the cloth

Flat squares don’t tell you how big a thing is. These do.

Emergence pattern collection mockups in two colorways - dining room wallpaper, folded fabric, a throw pillow and a bench of cushions, shown in pale Mist and deep Navy
