These are the things the woods drop in winter and don’t bother to pick back up: seed pods split open, beech leaves that hang on long after they should have let go, sweetgum burs, pine sprigs. I painted them by hand in copper and apricot, and set them on a slate blue night that doesn’t exist anywhere outside this collection. Snow doesn’t fall on a ground that color. Here it does.

The outlines wobble and don’t always close. The paint runs past the line and stays there. I left every bit of it in, because a pod corrected smooth looks finished — and these aren’t finished. They’re holding.
