I’ve been experimenting with creating surface print patterns by hand – with actual paper, tape and scissors (real old school) – before having to go to the computer. I already do a LOT of design work at the computer and want a more human touch to my surface print work.

I’ve gotten as far as making a few passable print blocks by hand. It’s surprisingly creative as well as technically demanding – which is good for my hand skills and my brain.

Of course, there’s still a computer involved at some point because the printing and manufacturing process has changed so much that it’s necessary. That part isn’t as deeply interesting to me now as much as the work made with a human touch. I think we crave the use of our hands more than we know and are missing that in the age of “devices.”
